New style for the board

Postby Eric's Fat Brother » Sat 18 Sep, 2010 02:02 pm

Hey everyone, sorry for the unannounced change. I got a burr in my saddle this morning about the fact that we were still running a version of PHPBB that was two years old (or maybe more), and that wasn't super secure, so I decided to do something about it. And then I started the process twenty minutes before I had to take my daughter to her soccer game, so that resulted in the board being disabled for several hours. And now we have this totally unfamiliar-looking thing, but it works (as far as I can tell), so we're going with it. I will try to tweak the style a bit over the next few days or weeks or whatever, but I imagine we'll all survive.

Let me know if you run into any major issues.

While I can't say I like the new look, it's not the be and all and end all. I'm interested to see any tweaks you're going to make when you get a chance to make them.

OK, wasn't too sure about it yesterday, but I like it much better today! Thanks Jeff for all your hard work to keep this Village up and running.

Jeff, why are your avatar pictures distorted? It doesn't seem to have affected any of the others, but little Lindsay is tweaked since this new style started.

I have been without internet at home all weekend, so this is my first chance to review the new format.

Mostly, I like it. But I like having "Previous topic | Next topic" and the "next page in this thread" at the bottom as well as the top. Is that hard to do?

And is there some reason we're calling it the Support Forum now instead of something with Snider in the name? That, more than the different appearance, made me think I was in the wrong place. Not that we don't support each other here or anything, but that seems like an odd name.

We're currently calling it the Support Forum because that is the default of the theme that I installed. That is #1 on the list of things to tweak. And the links at the bottom of the page are #2.

Mom, my avatar is distorted and the rest aren't because I have a special avatar that does a different image every time, and they aren't all the same size, and this new template wants all of them to be the same size. But fixing that is pretty low on my list. (I need to add Logan into the rotation at some point.)

My avatar is distorted too. At least I think it is. Or are my kids' heads really shaped like that?

Several of the avatars are distorted. I particularly like SDR's

I love that I only have to click once to get italics now! Woo hoo!
If you smile at me I will understand, 'cause that is something everybody everywhere does in the same language.

For anyone besides me whose avatar is stretched, it's because it is wider than 125 pixels, which was the default maximum width. Anything wider than that (or taller than 200 pixels, probably, since that was the max height) got set to 125x200, no matter what the original dimensions were. I have changed the maxes to 200x200, and I updated robcan2's just to make sure it worked. Anyone else whose avatar is stretched will just have to go into their account and manually set the dimensions to be correct.

Hey, thanks Jeff. I always suspected you liked me best. Do you want to fix the url in my signature too?

Mine was only 116x90, but the system couldn't detect the size for some reason. Perhaps it has a problem with PNG files...

I like the way the board's name looks.

I'm seeing a section now that provides me the opportunity to attach files. I didn't want to just attach a file and see what happens. Could this be used to post pictures, or would it just contain the file of the picture and not show the picture itself?

I would guess that yes, you can use that to attach pictures of kitchens or kittens or mittens or whatever.

The title of the board is actually in a font that was made from my own handwriting. It appears that the dot over my "i" didn't register in the font-making process. Oh well. I dig it anyway.
