Abusing the forum

Postby Claytonius Maximus » Wed 27 Jul, 2005 08:31 am

Hey efb,

I just noticed this in the Haiku thread that was recently resurrected. I don't know the name of this type of spam/scam, but I'm sure you do:

Online Proxy Checker, proxy checker, proxies checker, check proxies list, online checking proxy, check free proxies, check free proxylist, proxi checker, proxy checking, proxies list cheker, socks proxy checker, check socks proxies, socks 5 proxy checker, socks 4 proxy checker, HTTP proxy checker, socks proxy check, online check socks proxies, check list of proxies

I didn't re-copy the link that comes at the end of that message. Feel free to delete this after you take care of it.

You've noticed how most of the new members that are joining the board are wanting to sell us drugs without a prescription, right? Hydrocodone...score!

I enjoy how the most recently registered user is named Linda, and her interest is "generic Cialis".

Makes me laugh.

Maybe her husband uses the product?

It makes me laugh, too.

Is there no way to stop sign-ups like that? Like having one of those 'type the characters in the above image into this box' thingy (very technical there) at the sign-up stage?

Jeff could add that feature very quickly as it is a feature already in phpBB...The problem is that only stops bots from signing up. We used it on another board that I work with and they still get users like that. It might cut back though.

I assumed that the majority of them were bots. I would have thought that if people were going to do something like that they would at least try and slot it into the regular conversation.

My mistake.

An account does not become active or visible until the user has clicked a link in an automatically generated email that goes to their email address. As far as I know, bots can't do that, so I think any account that gets activated has to be a real person. I don't know if there is anything I can do other than delete any posts they make. I already spend 15 minutes a few times a week going through and deleting any accounts belonging to these spammers, most of which never get activated. I may implement the image verification in the signup process and see if it helps with those accounts, which may be bots. But as far as the ones who go to the trouble of activating their accounts and posting, we may be outta luck.

I'd forgotten about the e-mail activation thing. Those people that do activate their account need to get out more. But then so do I, so who am I to judge?

We probably all need to get out more. I suggest that we mail bomb everyone that signs up, activates and spams the board. That should teach them a lesson (or maybe that is my immature side speaking again).

And at least this most recent guy didn't post anything obnoxious.

I hate to post this and risk looking really confused and/or dumb. But I would hate even more for the boards to get scewed up. I was looking at the list of members and I noticed that it looked like a whole lot more than the 500-whatever it is you say there are. I know from experience you approve new members. It says our last member joined was Scottish Rose. When I looked at date joined in descending order there were 1,173 people that have joined since her. That's all in Nov and Dec. Thirty-one joined today alone. A lot are obviously made up. Maybe they are not "fully activated" as discussed above. I would just hate for someone to be hacking in, or whatever it is that may be going on. Please excuse any "apparent to everyone but me" idiocy. I just know there have been probs in the past so...there you have it.

Jeff, I have a newer CAPTHA mod for phpBB that is working quite well on another site. It has stopped all spammers from even attempting to sign up. I can find you the link if you are interested.
