Avatars

Postby lahimatoa » Thu 11 Aug, 2005 09:37 am

What are the size limitations for avatars again? I've been looking for the original thread, but can't find it. I'm trying to avoid having mine deleted.

Thanks!

It was in the Official Rules thread, but it seems to have gone bye-bye when I restored previous data after the hacking. I will get it back, but I will also tell you, the max avatar width is 125px, which means yours is 35px too big.

I notice that a lot of you have pictures of yourselves or your children as avatars. How are you doing that?

DISREGARD THIS: To post an avatar, you have to have it hosted at some external site (mine are hosted on my own webserver; my mom's are hosted on Eric's server, because I have that power). You then just link to it in your profile (http://www.whatever.com/yourimage.jpg), and it shows up.

REGARD THIS: In the main forum, there is a new thread about avatars, which details how to upload your avatar to our server. The paragraph above is still an option, but is no longer the ONLY option.

This is great! Now I can show off my kids, too.

Thanks, Momma. And Thank YOU, EFB. I've wanted to have an avatar for a while.

I just posted this question on the sticky avatar notice in the main forum, but then I realized that perhaps it would be better placed here. EFB, if you want to delete the other one, go ahead.

So, I'm not the most skilled person at manipulating image files. If one has a photo that one wants to use for one's avatar, but the photo is too big, how does one reduce it to acceptable avatar size?

Nick's solution in the other thread is probably the best using what comes with the average computer (meaning without spending money on software).

Where in Eagle Mountain do you live, robcan? (P.S.--I know my official rules of this thread kind of frown on personal discussions, but rules were made to be broken by the people who make them.)

Good deal, thanks! I'll try Nick's suggestion. I live in the City Center in the 2nd Ward. Did you move to EM, Jeff?

We are building in City Center. Our house will probably be done around January or February. I don't know the ward boundaries, but we are building just northeast of the elementary school.

Very cool. Yeah, I'm not exactly sure which ward you'll be in, but it's not the 2nd Ward. I love it out there. I have to drive about 45 minutes to get to work, but it's not so bad. I actually kind of like being far away from "civilization." Plus, since I work in HR, it's convenient to live away from where most of our (former) employees live 8)

PS. My new avatar is an actual bald eagle photographed in Eagle Mountain. I haven't seen it around for more than a year, though. We used to have golden eagles too, but with all the construction I'm afraid they've moved on.

My comment about Nick's pretty baby looks a little silly with his new avatar, doesn't it?

I thought I remembered jeff saying something about the board automatically resizing uploaded avatars to be within the limits, but when I tried to upload one it just gave me an error saying it's too big. am I up in the night about the auto-resize feature?

I don't know what "up in the night" means, but if it's anything like "crazy" or "making crap up," then yes, yes you are.

Unfortunately, you have to resize your avatar on your own.

Jeff, I'm having trouble uploading a new avatar--I put in the link and hit "submit", but the avatar doesn't show up. I don't think there's a problem with the image--it's 124 x 166, 16.3 KB. Is there some kind of bug in the program, or am I doing something wrong?
