SNL visits Elders Quorum

Postby Penelope » Mon 07 May, 2007 11:34 am

My husband just IMed me with a link to an SNL clip that was used yesterday in his Elders Quorum meeting (LDS Sunday meeting for men). At first I thought, "You've got to be kidding me--who would play SNL in church?" But after watching the clip, I can see why the teacher used it. It crosses that whole "Church-approved materials" line, but better this than Chicken Soup for the Soul.

The lesson, as you can probably guess, was about financial responsibility/preparedness.

That's a great clip. We had the same lesson, and I think this might have been more effective.

When I was in the Priests Quorum the bishop of a ward I visited showed the St Crispin's Day speech from Henry V. It was also pretty effective.

When the local missionaries made a faith-promoting video and used the Gladiator and Braveheart soundtracks, and it just made me think of the movies- less effective.

I once thought about using the sequence where they're arming the children before the battle of Helm's Deep in Lord of the Rings: Two Towers in a Gospel Doctrine lesson about the Nephites' final battle at Cumorah. I couldn't quite muster up the nerve to do it, but I still wonder about how a lesson like that would have gone . . .

The link is dead. I didn't get to see it.

It ended with Chris Farley yelling about "...you're gonna end up, living in a Vaaaaan, down by the riiiiiiverrrrr!!!!!"

Or maybe not. I didn't get to see it, either.
Have a nice day, unless you already have other plans.

Thanks, Penelope. That was one of my favorite clips ever. I wish I had thought to show it in church!

We believe SNL to be the word of god as far as it is transcripted correctly.

SNL and the church will always be linked in my mind because it first came to my attention about the time I joined the church.
