indexing

Postby Momma Snider » Mon 28 May, 2012 12:57 pm

I'm an Indexing Fool! I've done over 1400 names in the past two weeks. I'm thinking maybe that's why my shoulders and neck hurt so much, but now it's an addiction.

Anybody else?

I got into it, and then I got out of it, but now that they have an iPad app to do it with, I may get back into it.

Is there a big church-wide indexing push that I missed? Everyone I know seems to be talking about it more and more recently. Our new ward here in CA has a goal to do something like 500 names per person per month. Friends talk about it like they feel guilty for not doing it, and I have NO IDEA what they are talking about. I've heard about indexing, but I have no idea how to do it.

I think the reason there's a new push is because the 1940 census was just released, and all those names have to be indexed. It's easy to get started, just go to the church website and find the link.

I forgot you were moving to California. Where are you?

We are in Manteca. It's between Stockton and Modesto. We really like it here so far!

I'll be at 3000 names indexed by tonight. I set a goal of 5000 by October 1, but I suspect I'll be there by August. But I'm sure irritated sometimes by lousy handwriting and spelling! And when it's a name, you never know if it's the census worker who messed up, or the person's mom.

Our stake has a goal of one million names by October 10.

I'll hit 5000 names by tonight. I only need to do three batches to get there, about an hour total. I could do a lot more, except I think I'll try to do something that doesn't involve sitting on the couch today.

And now I've done 9700 names. I'm so happy when I get a batch with good handwriting!
I searched on Ancestry.com for my mom's family in 1940. I didn't know what state they lived in at the time, because they moved around a lot, but I found them in Kansas. But my grandpa, whose name was Cecil, was indexed as Caril, and my mom, Mary Joanna, was indexed at Margoan! The census worker got it wrong in the first place, made it Marjoan, but even that was very clearly written, and the indexer and arbitrator decided on Margoan, which isn't even a name.

I was able to correct it, though, which I didn't know you could do.

12,567. It has slowed down a lot since the 1940 census was finished.

So wow. This is pretty awesome! I have probably only indexed a paltry 100 - 200 names or something like that. You are an inspiration.

I had hoped to get to 15,000 names by the end of August, but I'm only in the 14,000s somewhere. I guess I'm getting a little bored with it, because I still have couch-sitting laptop-playing time, I'm just using it in less productive ways.

Everyone's got seasons in their lives, and if I had kids at home this would not be my indexing season. As it is, I not only don't have kids at home, I frequently don't have a husband here, either, so I have time.

I had a goal of 20,000 names by our stake conference, which is this coming weekend. Our stake goal was one MILLION names, and our ward goal was 100,000. We do have a huge stake and a huge ward, so it should have been possible, but I don't think the stake will get to that goal, even if our ward does. And I didn't think I'd make my goal, but I had decided I'd settle for 19,500, and then when I got close to that I decided to really push forward and get to 20,000. I have about 300 left to do in the next three days, which shouldn't be a problem. That's less than an hour a day. I think I can!

But I found out I'd been doing something wrong. On the passenger lists, there's a column for Place of Birth or Nationality, and for lists where they were all American, I was putting United States. (Different kinds of records have different rules, and that's the rule for one kind.) Turns out I was supposed to be putting the city, if it was listed. So I don't know how many records I did wrong, and there's no way to go back and fix anything. Maybe it's easier to be an overachiever if you do it wrong. :(
